Immunomodulatory effects of a homeopathic agent.

This paper discusses the results of a scientific study that
investigated the in vitro and in vivo immunostimulatory effects of
a homeopathic medication on laboratory mice. The results showed
that the mixture significantly increased immuno-cellular activity
in mice that were administered with cells extracted from patients
with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and AIDS. The medication exhibited no
toxicity even when administered even in high doses. The medication
also showed reduced levels of infection in the pancreas of mice
challenged with a genetic strain of diabetes. The homeopathic
mixture did not exhibit any antiviral effect in vitro. Thus, the
homeopathic medication used in the current study may be more useful
as a prophylactic agent rather than for treatment of acute viral
infection, with the exception of persistent Natural Killer (NK)
sensitive viruses such as Hepatitis B and HIV where the medication
showed significant increased NK activity. Anecdotal reports have
suggested an improved survival and quality of life in some
HIV-infected patients. The preparation has also proven to be
nontoxic in adjuvant, compassionate use for patients with
non-curable cancers. The best evidence for efficacy is for asthma,
for which three placebo-controlled trials using homeopathic
preparations of appropriate allergens showed benefits. Based on the
research presented in this paper, it is not surprising that many
patients resort to treatment modalities, including homeopathic
preparations that are outside the mainstream of Western
medicine.

Cancer, despite the work of modern science, is still marked by
the stigma of a slow, painful death, taking a horrific emotional
and economic toll on patients. Much of the emotional counseling
that patients receive, though well-intended, focuses more on the
needs of the counselor than those of the patient. As such, it is
important to uplift the patient spiritually, and not simply treat
the patient with a scalpel and a concoction of physical and
chemical cures. This article focuses on the need for physicians to
look beyond economic factors, and, within realistic parameters,
provide encouragement and comfort to their patients.
